Winter 2016

Rejoicing!

The end of the old year and beginning of the new is typically a time of reflection. We reflect back on the previous year and look forward to what the new year holds.

Looking BackAs I look back over the ministry of HGBBC in 2015 my heart rejoices. Not so much in the physical accomplishments, although there were many physical accomplishments last year, but in the love and faithfulness of our God in drawing hearts to Himself. God is so good! It is simply by His mercy that we are not consumed by our own sin.
The premise here at camp is that God’s Word is sufficient for the needs of men’ hearts… and God has proven that over and over this year. My thoughts go to individuals who came in need of encouragement… and God encouraged them through the promises of His Word. Some came with grave concern over children whose hearts seem cold or drifting from God’s love. It was such a blessing to see their faith renewed in a sovereign and loving God. Living on our knees and crying out to God in desperate dependence may not be a pleasant place to be, but it is a good place to be… for it is while we are there that we truly learn in an experiential way of the wonderful character of our God.
Some came with hearts hardened by sin and indifference… and God in His great love and mercy drew them back to Himself. A few came not knowing God at all or doubting His ability to save… and an all powerful God broke down the walls of doubt, fear and unbelief and brought them to an understanding and trust of His saving power.
When I consider the work of God in the hearts of men immediately my thoughts go to the apostle Paul’s doxology in Romans 11…  “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”

There were many physical accomplishments this past year as well. Often the physical changes to the facilities here are also a direct result of God’s work in the hearts of His people. He touches their hearts and they give. He touches their hearts and they go. How I praise Him for His love as shown through His people.
Perhaps the most noticeable difference is on the front of the lodge. The old lodge entry was removed and a new entry built that provides more covering and more visibility for better safety. Many thanks to the men from Faith Baptist in Taylors S.C. for their hard work on the entry.

God also provided through His people when the septic system at the house failed.

God touched the hearts of a group of people from Grace Baptist Church in Muncie Indiana to come and help with a “face-lift” for the boy’s cabins and the low ropes course. From day one we felt like we had known these brothers and sisters forever. Even now a smile comes when I think of them. 🙂 They were such an encouragement and blessing… words cannot express some things.
The “Grace Project” team accomplished so much there is no way I could begin to list it all here. Besides the main projects of the cabins and low ropes they accomplished everything from landscape beautification work (a rare thing here) to vehicle repair. Truly the love of God was seen through them.

When I think back over this past year and all that was accomplished both physically and spiritually all I can say is “Thank You Lord.”

Looking Ahead
As I consider the new year in front of us I do so with excited anticipation. Not because I think it will be easy or without trials… but because I know the Lord will continue to work and provide for His glory. When I look around at our rapidly changing culture I expect trials. But… “our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
I don’t know what the new year holds, but I know Who holds the new year. Keep on keeping on! Maybe the Lord will return this year…either way we are rejoicing!
